Meat inspection - An explaination.
Every animal slaughtered for human consumption in the UK is subject to ante and post mortem inspection. Currently this is carried out by veterinary surgeons and highly trained and experienced professional inspectors.
The reasons for this are simple, ante mortem inspection prevents the killing for food of animals that are clearly diseased and ensures that animal welfare regulations are complied with. Post mortem inspection identifies diseases and conditions within the carcase that may cause disease or harm to the consumer.
Put simply, meat inspectors protect YOU, the public from harm from diseased meat, and protect the welfare of animals.
Currently, meat inspection is carried out under the control of the Meat Hygiene Service, an agency of the FSA, and is therefore independant of the slaughterhouse operators. Proposals being put forward by HM Government indicate that this vital role may soon be placed in the hands of the plant operators themselves.
This situation has led to concerns being expressed by meat inspectors that the impartiality, and with it, the safety of food will be compromised by cost cutting meat plants.
